Immune Response
Exogenous and endogenous regulation of cytokine production
THE CONTEXT
Cytokine production responds to external stimuli as well as internal hormonal and biochemical factors.
Regulatory inputs
•
Exogenous stimuli regulating cytokine production include antigens and mitogens.
•
Endogenous regulators include neuroendocrine hormonal peptides, with corticosteroids and endorphins given as examples.
•
Products of the lipoxygenase and cyclooxygenase pathways also regulate cytokine production as endogenous factors.
