Functions of antibody-mediated and cell-mediated immunity
THE CONTEXT
Antibody-mediated immunity and cell-mediated immunity contribute to host defence and also participate in immune-mediated disease.
Antibody-mediated immunity
•
Antibody-mediated immunity provides primary defence against most extracellular bacterial pathogens.
•
It helps defend against viruses entering through the respiratory or intestinal tracts and prevents recurrence of virus infections.
•
It participates in immediate hypersensitivity of types 1, 2 and 3 and in certain autoimmune diseases.
Cell-mediated immunity
•
Cell-mediated immunity protects against fungi, viruses and facultative intracellular bacterial pathogens.
•
It participates in homograft rejection and graft-versus-host reaction.
•
It provides immunological surveillance and immunity against cancer.
•
It mediates delayed, type 4 hypersensitivity and participates in certain autoimmune diseases.
