Microbiology
Immune Response
Host factors affecting immunological tolerance
THE CONTEXT
The ease of inducing tolerance varies with the host's species, strain and degree of immunocompetence.
Host variation
•
Strain differences in tolerance induction
occur within species.
•
Rabbits and mice
can be rendered tolerant more rapidly than guinea pigs and chickens.
Immunocompetence and age
•
The greater the host's immunocompetence, the more difficult it is to induce tolerance.
•
Embryos and newborns
are particularly susceptible to tolerance induction because of this relationship with immunocompetence.
