IL-1: pyrogenic and inflammatory effects

IL-1 contributes to fever and to inflammatory changes in septic shock and bacterial meningitis.

IL-1 is an important endogenous pyrogen.
•
Together with tumour necrosis factor (TNF), IL-1 is responsible for many hematological changes in septic shock.
•
IL-1 also enhances the initial meningeal inflammation in bacterial meningitis.
