Immune Response
Instructive versus selective theories of immunity
THE CONTEXT
Theories of immunity
are divided into instructive and selective categories according to the specificity attributed to immunocompetent cells.
Central distinction
•
Instructive theories propose that an immunocompetent cell
can synthesise antibodies of any specificity.
•
Selective theories shift emphasis from the antigen to the immunocompetent cell and propose that such cells have a restricted immunological range.
