Immune Response
Interleukin-1: properties, cellular sources and production
THE CONTEXT
Interleukin-1 (
IL-1
)
* is a stable polypeptide whose production responds to inflammatory stimuli and inhibitory agents.
Properties and sources
•
IL-1 retains activity up to 56°C and between pH 3 and 11.
•
It occurs in two molecular
forms: alpha and beta.
•
Macrophages and monocytes principally secrete IL-1, although most other nucleated cells can also produce it.
Regulation of production
•
Antigens, toxins, injury and inflammatory processes stimulate IL-1 production.
•
Cyclosporin A, corticosteroids and prostaglandins inhibit IL-1 production.
