Microbiology
Immune Response
Three steps of antibody production
THE CONTEXT
Antibody production proceeds through an afferent limb, central functions, and an efferent limb.
Sequence
•
The afferent limb
comprises antigen entry, its distribution and fate in tissues, and contact with appropriate immunocompetent cells.
•
Central functions
comprise cellular processing of antigen and control of antibody formation.
•
The efferent limb
comprises antibody secretion, distribution in tissues and body fluids, and manifestation of antibody effects.
