Study note

Transfer factor and antigen-specific transfer of immunity

THE CONTEXT
Transfer factor (TF) is a leucocyte extract associated with passive transfer of cell-mediated immunity (CMI).

Passive transfer and specificity

•
Passive transfer of CMI was first achieved by injecting viable leucocytes from sensitised donors.
•
The leucocyte extract is called transfer factor.
•
Transferred immunity is specific: CMI can be transferred only to antigens to which the donor is sensitive.
