Transfer factor: serial transfer and proposed mechanism
THE CONTEXT
Transfer factor (TF) transfers cell-mediated immunity (CMI) reflecting the donor's antigen sensitivities, although its mechanism remains unknown.
Scope and serial transfer
•
TF transfers CMI to all antigens to which the donor is sensitive as a whole.
•
CMI can subsequently be transferred from the recipient to another individual in a serial fashion.
Proposed mechanism
•
The mechanism of TF action is not known.
•
TF could act as an informational molecule or a specific gene derepressor, inducing antigenically uncommitted lymphocytes to produce antigen-specific receptors.
Demonstration across species
•
TF activity was previously demonstrable only in humans; activity has also been reported in monkeys, guinea pigs and mice.
