Study note

Transforming growth factor beta and leukemia inhibitory factor

THE CONTEXT
The passage describes growth-promoting and regulatory actions of two cytokines.

Transforming growth factor beta

•
Transforming growth factor beta (TGF-b) was named for its ability to transform fibroblasts.
•
It acts as a growth factor for fibroblasts and promotes wound healing.
•
It also down-regulates some immunological and hematological processes.

Leukemia inhibitory factor

•
Leukemia inhibitory factor (LIF)* is produced by T cells.
•
LIF helps stem cell proliferation and eosinophil chemotaxis.
